Fabulous Food!

Students are developing their knowledge, understandings and skills to maintain personal well-being in the context of making food safe decisions to avoid food poisoning and taking care around food.

We have conducted an experiment focusing on the importance of washing your hands prior to eating.

In this experiment Ms Snellaert washed her hands for 20 seconds and dried them thoroughly. She then placed her clean hands into gloves. Retrieving the bread from the packet with minimal touch, she then placed the bread slice into a ziplock bag, as shown. Overtime, certain mould has grown.... the students and I predicted what we might see over the next couple of weeks.

Photo taken in Term 1 Week 3.

The Semi-Controlled experiment focused on Ms Snellaert taking off the gloves, hands still clean and placing the bread slice, again with minimal touch, into a zip lock bag.
The third slice of bread was then passed around the entire classroom, allowing every student to touch it. The focus here was exemplifying to students that as they hadn't washed their hands, bacteria and germs are on their hands, stressing the importance to wash their hands before eating!

Students and I identified what would make our classroom a productive, positive and respectful and engaging community - this is our agreement....

Math - Understanding place value

Students used materials to see how a group of tens is grouped together and how a separate group for ones is formed. By forming these groups students were able to see how 25 is made up of 2 groups of 10 and 5 ones.

Literacy - Students collaborating successfully

Students were put into mixed ability groups to work together respectfully to come up with adjectives for various words. Words included the senses i.e. touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Adjectives for taste included sour, tart, minty, sweet, spicy and tangy. The objective is to have students increase the use for adjectives in their writing. They did very well!
