Librarian visit

Librarians:

We had the pleasure of receiving a visit from two excellent librarians from the Glenfield Library. They put on an excellent demonstration of how books can be told using creative prompts and expression.

They also showed us how IT is becoming more and more integrated into books. Please make sure you visit your local library and ask for more information.

Creating our Neurons

After the visit from the nueroscientists, we unpacked the job of the neuron. We were able to identify the different parts of the neuron.

Carla is creating her neuron by adding dendrites to her nucleus (round part)
The dendrites job is to receive messages.
Rowyn, Maui and MacKenzie are adding the axon (long thin body part) to their neuron.
The axon's job is to send the message down the neuron to the axon terminal,
which then passes the message to the next neuron.

Carla has completed her neuron.
All students created a mini information report which you can view on our back wall.
Spin it around and it will describe each of part of the neuron and their particular job!

Oscar presented a very clear illustration of how each part of the

neuron worked.

Great effort!

Mini Olympics

Thank you to the senior syndicate who organised a fantastic event. This provided opportunities for students to have a go at sports they may not normally participate in - this allowed for great sportsmanship and taking risks!

Some great making of the archery device!

Coastal sustainability

The middle syndicate had the pleasure of listening to a guest speaker who discussed significant reasons why we should look after and take good care of our beaches.

Taking greater care and responsibility ensures our beaches and coastal areas are kept clean, but more importantly that our sea life remains free from plastics and debris.

We discussed the importance and key features of refuse, reuse and recycle.

Brain Power......!!!

The Middle Syndicate is focusing on the workings of the brain in Term 3. In our room of awesome learners we have discovered the scientific names for the different parts of the brain and the jobs those particular parts do.

In week 2 we had the pleasure of meeting two neuroscientists and experienced what a 'human brain' (plasticised) actually felt like and looked like.

We had the opportunity to view a cats brain, a monkeys brain and a rats brain.

Ask your child which parts of the brain they remember!

Great opportunities! Take a look....

Maori Language Week

Vertical Groups

In our vertical groups we discussed the importance of flax (Harakeke) and how Maoris used this wonderful resource. This included wrapping food for a hangi, weaving Harakeke for sail cloths, piupius, weaving to create mats, baskets and bags (kete) and much more.

The students then made their own flower (putiputi) - quite challenging.

We also discussed the parts of Harakeke, the child (Rito), the parent (Awhi Rito) and the grandparent (Tupuna).

Mahi Pai everyone!

Mathematics

WALT to identify fractions of a given set.

Students are manipulating materials and understanding how a whole can be equaling shared.

Students are learning that the numbers of fraction are broken into two parts; the denominator (bottom number) and numerator (top number).

All students can identify that the denominator is the number that the whole is equally cut into, and the numerator signifies the number of equal pieces we are talking about.

Students here have learnt that 1/6 of 36 = 6. Further questions were posed including 2/6 of 36 = 12, 3/6 of 36 = 18.

Prior to learning fractions we were understanding multiplication strategies and how $42.00 can be divided in different ways.

These wonderful mathematicians were collaborating and sharing ideas how $42.00 were evenly dispersed using different denominations.

Literacy

We are working on descriptive writing.

Library....

We have some very keen readers in our class.

Here Levi and I discuss the roles of each chess piece and their significance on the chess board!

Sina explains why she likes her favourite author Geronimo Stilton. Lastly, MacKenzie discusses why she selected a book on Tonga, very close to her own country, Samoa. MacKenzie explained how similar the number words were between Tonga and Samoa!
