Maori Language Week

Vertical Groups

In our vertical groups we discussed the importance of flax (Harakeke) and how Maoris used this wonderful resource. This included wrapping food for a hangi, weaving Harakeke for sail cloths, piupius, weaving to create mats, baskets and bags (kete) and much more.

The students then made their own flower (putiputi) - quite challenging.

We also discussed the parts of Harakeke, the child (Rito), the parent (Awhi Rito) and the grandparent (Tupuna).

Mahi Pai everyone!
